Illustrates services, materials and facilities of public and school libraries. Shows students how to use the card catalog and locate books. Explains vertical picture files and those for other A/V materials.

Story hour in the public library children's room features a Paul Bunyan tall tale. At the same time Susan's class in school is studying the westward movement in the United States. These two episodes dovetail neatly to make an exciting committee project for Susan and her friends to share with the class. Their efforts to create a puppet presentation of a Paul Bunyan story lead them to various library tools such as the card catalog, reference books, audiovisual materials and the like, as well as to the many services of home, school, and public libraries. They discover how to make puppets; where to locate pictures for setting and costumes; how to use records for creating atmosphere. Both the school and children's librarians join in the plans and give valuable assistance. Both are invited to the performance which climaxes this "learning experience," and both mutually agree with the children that libraries are exciting places for discovery.
